Writing prompts are so awesome! Here is one from a blog I'm following that could be a great personal blog posts, or could be used in a fictional story. :) Enjoy and feel free to comment with what you think of this prompt. Do you use them in your writing routine?

OK kittens, let's briefly talk about The Voice. I never watch this show live, so I'll be brief in my comments. Let's split 'em up into the winners and losers of the week.

Winners

Last week I didn't love Sarah Simmons' on the Sarah MacLachlan song, but I adored this. Great song, powerful performance. Judith Hill, of course, also really stood out this week.

Read more… 388 more words

Been very busy getting some writing time in, so I didn't have a chance to write up a recap of The Voice this week. I would, however, love to share this post with you guys. I agree with most of what she had to say, although I disagree slightly with the comments on Sasha. Yes, I do think she tended towards sounding Broadway in it, but what a performance! It was so emotional; I could swear she was going to burst into tears onstage.

By the way.... how awesome were the group performance of "LoveSong" and "Play Something Country"? People are giving Blake crap because he has an all-country team but I think it's great! He's staying true to who he is and what he loves.

So what do you all think? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments! :)

The Pistol Annies have a new album out called Annie Up, and they’ve now released the first official music video. Check it out:

This is probably one of my favorite new videos. The concept is perfect for the song, and they are really working those facial expressions. This is definitely an album to add to the “must buy” list at some point.

Are you a fan of the Annies? Can you relate to the message in this song? Comment and let’s chat about it!

Love, love, love new videos and I get to share one with you guys today. The Lone Bellow has just released their video for “Bleeding Out” and will be going on tour in support of a new album. Check it out and enjoy! — Jamie

THE LONE BELLOW ANNOUNCE SUMMER TOUR DATES

DATES COME ON HEELS OF INTERNATIONAL ALBUM RELEASE

BAND SET TO PERFORM ON THE TONIGHT SHOW with JAY LENO ON MAY 22ND

Critically-acclaimed “Brooklyn Country” band The Lone Bellow (Descendant Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment) continue their trek across the country, making more fans as they go. The band is announcing tour dates throughout the summer. The dates will take them coast-to-coast and see them playing with everyone from Brandi Carlile to Robert Plant; from Newport Folk to Outside Lands and, as always, back in Brooklyn as headliners as part of Celebrate Brooklyn.

Watch New Video for “Bleeding Out”:

The band, whose self-titled album came out to unanimous raves on January 22nd in America have announced a world-wide deal with Descendant Records/Sony Music, and will be releasing the album internationally in the coming months due to overwhelming demand. The Lone Bellow, who appeared on Conan on release date, will perform their new single, “Bleeding Out” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on May 22nd. A video for the track premiered on Vevo on 5/8.

The Lone Bellow has been called one of the best albums of the year by People Magazine and the band garnered raves from everyone from USA Today, The New York Times, The Associated Press, Paste, Forbes and Filter. NPR’s Bob Boilen simply stated, “The world of acoustic music is about to get a new household name. The music of The Lone Bellow is born from tragedy and told with heart and simplicity.”

The Lone Bellow is lead singer and principal songwriter Zach Williams; singer and mandolin player Kanene Pipkin, and singer-guitarist Brian Elmquist. Initially, they made a name for themselves with their acclaimed live shows in New York and across the country during their stint opening for The Civil Wars. Of the band’s opening slot for the Grammy Winners, The Orlando Sentinel says, “the main attraction had some competition in the harmony realm from The Lone Bellow, a Brooklyn-based trio cut from the same rootsy fabric. Between songs, Williams also had a deft comedic touch, a nice fit on a night when sadness still offered reason to smile.”

Georgia-born Williams began songwriting in 2005, during a prolonged stay at Atlanta’s Shepherd Center after his wife was thrown from a horse and paralyzed from the neck down. With a dire diagnosis of quadriplegia, there was nothing to do but sit vigil with his group of friends – also artists. While they waited for healing, Zach picked up a guitar and taught himself to play, putting melody to a journal entry that would become his first song, “Hospital.” His wife eventually recovered (her spinal cord, initially thought severed, was terribly bruised) and the couple and their group of friends moved to Brooklyn shortly thereafter.

Williams and the band’s music evolved to reflect his Southern roots, incorporating elements of rock, gospel, country and blues that result in a unique and soul-searing blend of can’t-get-them-out-of-your-head lyrics that spring from a deep emotional reservoir.

How important (or not) is relating
your writing to your past or present residences?

First, thanks for having me here today, Kenneth. I love this feature you do, so it’s awesome to be a part of it.

I think it’s a big help to “write what you know”. I put little details of people I know and things I’ve experienced into my stories, and I think that brings a certain life to a story that research alone can’t quite give you.

Doing something a little different again this week, as we have been swamped and didn’t get a chance to watch anything this week. I thought since I’m trying to get in the groove for a writing session right now, I’d share one of the songs that’s helping to fuel my muse at the moment. This comes from Alexz Johnson’s Skipping Stone EP, and will definitely be on my Stains playlist when I get it together and put it out there:

What do you think of this song? Does it get you thinking of a story? Comment and let’s chat about it!
