Yesterday, I didn’t post on my blog or my Facebook page/profile/twitter/etc in support of the anti-sopa protests. I’m sure by now most of you have heard of the SOPA and PIPA bills currently under consideration. If you haven’t here is some info. Let me break some stuff down for you.

There is an image going around saying that under the SOPA law, you could get five years for putting a Michael Jackson song on YouTube. FIVE years for uploading one song, one less than his doctor got for giving him the drug that killed him even though it was NOT supposed to be used outside of a hospital setting. Let’s put that into further perspective. In 2007, Lindsay Lohan got high on drugs and hijacked a car with several people inside and then chased someone she was upset with. That’s drug use, possession, car theft, reckless driving, harassment and who knows what else. Not to mention the fact that she has spent 3-4 years after this continually refusing to show up for court dates, violating probation terms and other things. To date she’s only actually put in a couple months for all of that. I’m not saying I think piracy is right, but I do think a penalty like that is an over-reaction.

I also worry about the fact that the law is so broad and could have potentially bad consequences for indie writers and artists. We rely on YouTube and social media sites for advertising and to connect with readers/listeners. If these sites are now forced to seek out and take down tons of videos themselves, it could put a completely unfair burden on them that could potentially cause a shut down that would be disastrous for us.

Let’s stand together and protect our free speech, our friends and ourselves. Speak out against SOPA/PIPA. Write/tweet your representatives and sign the petition. A vote on PIPA is coming on the 24th and SOPA will get voted on in February so now’s the time to make your voice heard.
