Author HeadshotWhen you have a chance to hear authors speak or read their “how to” books, there’s one common refrain that pops up from time-to-time – write what you know. Why is that? When you think about it, it’s pretty simple, straight-forward and easily understandable. How can you write about things of which you have no clue?

But as an author, what do you do when you have a great idea for a book outside of what you know? I’ve found myself in said quandary.

Most of my life I’ve been drawn to reading thrillers, mysteries, suspense, and fantasy (as in Tolkien’s Hobbit and Lord of the Rings). I have real-world knowledge of the political sphere, banking, and a myriad of personal experiences best left to peeking out from under the rug in fictionalized form. Thus as an author, this is what I’m drawn to when creating ideas for novels.

Many of my story ideas come from dreams – or in my case nightmares. The crackpots who say we dream in black and white have apparently never visited the vivid and colorful world that comes out of my psyche! Nearly a year ago I had this intense and frightening nightmare, awoke, and immediately ran to my computer to write out a short treatise on the subject, excited by the prospect of another possible novel. Since then, however, I’ve been stymied.

You see it’s more along the lines of a paranormal mystery. No, not the whole vampire and werewolf thing – more like ghost hunting. That whole write what you know mantra keeps haunting me because I’ve no knowledge of the paranormal genre. So now what?

When in doubt, research!

First I started out by watching some of the applicable shows on television to learn what the ghost hunting phenomenon was all about, equipment used, and verbiage. Didn’t get a whole lot out of it except plenty of chuckles. The idea since sat dormant until I recently picked up a freebie book for my Kindle, A Beginner’s Guide to Ghost Hunting by John R. S. Allen. Though the writing is under par – disclosure at the end states the author has dyslexia so some is forgiven – the material was just what I needed. I’ve even considered contacting a local ghost hunting group to see if I could tag along on an actual hunt. Nothing like real-world experience to lend a smattering of realism.

So even though the author’s mantra of write what you know is always a good phrase to have drilled into every writer’s brain, it doesn’t mean we can’t learn about and explore something new. Heck, maybe next time we meet, dear readers, it will be from some ghost hunting television show.

Who says dreams – and nightmares – can’t come true?

D A Bale‘s Bio

Sometimes life emulates fiction.

Life is filled with tragedy and Ms. Bale’s writing reflects this reality. However, there is always a silver lining…even if one must spend their entire life searching for it.

In her previous career, Ms. Bale traveled the United States as a Government Relations Liaison, working closely with Congressional offices and various government agencies. This experience afforded her a glimpse into the sometimes “not so pretty” reality of the political sphere. Much of this reality and various locations throughout her travels make it into her writing.

She dreams of the day she can return to visit Alaska.
