My Thoughts

This is the first of a new series of books by Mann that will be set in her home state of Maine. In this book, a young woman’s entire life is turned upside down by tragedy. A surprise letter leads her on a journey to her mother’s home state and forces her to confront a side of her mother she never knew. At the same time, Drew is thrust into the drama of small town life while she turns to some bad habits to silence the screams that plague her mind.

As with most of Marni’s books, there is a theme of darkness and struggling through painful memories/events. This time, she gives it the beautiful backdrop of a North Eastern fall, filling the book with descriptions that make this Florida girl wish she lived where she could experience proper seasons. The picture she paints starkly contrasts the themes of loss, betrayal, and addiction in the story.

Her characters are deeply flawed people who yearn for something better, something that their own personal demons threaten to take away. Their interactions feel genuine and there are some great bits of dialogue. Through all the darkness, Mann manages to infuse her stories with a sense of hope as well, even when some things don’t work out the way her characters may want.
